Faux DIY Wood Slice Cake Stand

I was recently at my niece’s birthday party and my sister had this gorgeous wood slice cake stand for the birthday cake. I instantly wanted one….and as I do with all things…wanted to go the DIY route! I knew I had some FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam discs that would be PERFECT for this and it was super easy!

Supplies needed to make this project:

  • (2) FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Discs: 12″ and 6″
  • FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Cutter
  • FloraCraft Smooth Finish®
  • Acrylic Paint: Brown and Cream
  • Fine Grit Sandpaper
  • FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® StyroGlue
  • Lacquer

Instructions:

Using the foam cutter, carve out the edges to make it look like bark. No rhyme or reason to this!  I carved little grooves into the edge and then indented a circle ring on the inside edge.

Next, coat your disc with Smooth Finish. I love this stuff! It actually feels like there is nothing in the bottle because it’s so light and airy.

On the left is one coat of smooth finish and on the right is without. It fills in the foam to make it all smooth.

I ended up using two coats and then sanded it to smooth out any rough spots.

Now paint. I painted the outside dark brown and the inside light and in a circular motion!  Play around with this a little bit until you get the look you want.  You can see I mixed a little bit of the light and dark colors around the outside edge to make it look more realistic.

After it dried I added a couple coats of lacquer–I don’t plan on placing food directly onto the wood slice…but wanted to protect it in case something spilled over!

Then I took a smaller disc and glued it to the bottom of the wood slice. You could add a couple discs to make it higher or not add any if you want it to just sit on the table! Choice is yours!  I painted the outside edge of the disc so that it blended in to the wood slice.

And now the best part—add some pie!  Remember though, this is a cake plate, not a hot plate.  Make sure your pie, cake or treat of choice is completely cooled before serving on you foam wood slice.

I didn’t know what pie would photograph well….so I decided to grab 3 (that’s what I told my husband anyways!)
