DIY Pineapple Decor
I was recently redoing a section of my craft room and really wanted a fun pineapple to sit on a shelf. And what’s a crafter to do…make one! It’s so easy and the perfect decor addition for the summer. Just think how funky this could be just by painting it a fun color!
Supplies needed to make this project:
- FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam: Egg, 4″
- FloraCraft Smooth Finish® Paintable Coating
- FloraCraft® StyroCutter® Plus or Foam Cutter
- FloraCraft® Design It:® Air Plant Picks
- FloraCraft® Foam Tools – Scribe Tool
- Acrylic Paint – Yellow, Green & Brown
- Paintbrush
- Fine-Grit Sandpaper
*You will want to make sure your egg and air plant pick are sized right and will look good together.
Instructions:
First, using your foam cutter, cut off the top of your egg then press the edges on a hard surface to create a pineapple shape. Then cut a flat spot on the bottom so the pineapple will be able to stand without tipping over.
Next, cover the whole egg with the smooth finish. This seals in the porous surface to make it easily paintable. After it dries, sand off any rough edges with fine grit sandpaper.
Next, use the scribe tool to indent some lines to give it the pineapple look. Since it’s smaller at the top than the bottom…the lines won’t be perfect but it’ll look realistic!
Now time for painting. First, use the brown paint to paint in all the grooves to give the pineapple some dimension.
Then, coat the entire pineapple with yellow paint. Be sure to lightly paint over the brown lines so a little bit still shows through. Let dry completely.
Last, push the air plant pick into the top for the pineapple crown.
I ended up going back through and dry-brushing a little bit of green paint into the grooves, but that is totally optional. I love how it turned out! Such a fun little pop of color in my craft room!
