DIY Hurricane Vase Base

Metallics are trending right now and can easily be incorporated in many different styles. Today I am sharing a fun and simple metallic hurricane vase base that can be used as a centerpiece or home accent piece.

Supplies needed to make this project:

  • FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam: 8″ Cake Form
  • FloraCraft Smooth Finish® Paintable Coating
  • FloraCraft® StyroCutter Plus®
  • Metallic Gold Paint
  • Sponge brush
  • Spoon
  • Sanding Block
  • Glass Hurricane Vase
  • Vase filler (I used river rocks with a candle, but you could use live plants or succulents)

Instructions:

To create your metallic base, you’ll start by cutting down a cake form with the StyroCutter or serrated knife.  This part is completely optional…you can leave it the full height too!  I chose to make the base about 2″ high.

Place the glass vase on top of the foam and draw a template for the base.

Use a spoon to scoop out about 3/4″ deep on the inside of the foam cake form.

Now you’ll apply a layer of smooth finish to the outer areas of the foam. Let the smooth finish dry completely and apply a second coat.

Use a fine sanding block to lightly sand the foam to create a more flawless finish for the metallic paint.

Now it’s time to apply the metallic paint to the foam base. Apply two coats allowing the form to dry in between coats.

When the paint is dry, you’ll insert the glass vase and fill with the candle and rocks. Now you’ve got a lovely centerpiece or home decor accent with a fun and trendy metallic finish.
