Supplies

Instructions:

You’ll start by cutting your foam sheet into strips. Measure using a ruler and sharpie. I chose a width of about 2″ per strip.

Measuring foam

Use the StyroCutter® Plus to cut out your strips. You’ll want to go slow and let the tool do the work. If the wand is bending, you’re pressing too hard.

Styrocutter

Once you have your strips cut, you’ll also need to cut your foam ball in half and use the StyroCutter or a serrated knife to create an apple shape by trimming down the bottom.

Apple Cut

Using a brush or putty knife, apply a thin layer of smooth finish to all your foam pieces. Let that dry completely.

Once your smooth finish has set, apply brown paint to your individual strips (be sure to paint down the sides a bit as well to make sure they are covered). Set aside to dry. Option: for a smoother look, you can sand the smooth finish down before you paint.  I liked the rough look so I skipped this step and went with the textured finish.

Brown paint

Paint your apple piece using red paint and set it aside to dry.

Painting apple

While the apple is drying, use the connectors or toothpicks to piece together the strips of foam. You can also apply a light layer of StyroGlue to help them stay together.

Now you’ll finish off the boards with grey chalky finish paint.

Chalky finish

Add a stem to the apple by inserting a stick into the top and glue on a paper or felt leaf.

Glue the apple onto the center of your “pallet” with low-temp hot glue and that’s it!  You have a beautiful lightweight apple sign that looks like real wood and is perfect for back to school.
