Easy String Art

Earth Day is coming up…April 22nd.  I have been wanting to try out sting art for such a long time…but let’s be real. I don’t have the patience to hammer in 100 nails all nice and straight (and I can only imagine the noise!).  I’ve got a fun and easy hack using FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam: Sheets!  And, it’s perfect for Earth day!

Supplies needed to make this project:

  • FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam: Sheet 1″ x 12″ x 36″ or 8″ Disc
  • FloraCraft Smooth Finish®  Paintable Coating
  • FloraCraft® StyroCutter® Plus or FoamCutter®
  • Template (whatever design you want to create)
  • Sharpie Marker
  • Acrylic Paint (I chose turquoise) or Fabric
  • Straight Pins
  • Embroidery Thread or Yarn
  • Paintbrush
  • Fine-Grit Sandpaper

Instructions:

Start by cutting out your shape. I sketched out my design using a sharpie. We did a heart design as you’ll see below and Earth. The Earth is made from the foam disc.

I finished them two different ways…both worked!

The first finish I tried was paint. I started by covering the disc with smooth finish. This helps the foam become less porous and gives a, well, smooth finish! After it dries completely, sand off the edges and then paint.  I gave mine an ombre effect by making the outside edges darker than the center.

At the craft store you will find pins with all sorts of different colored heads. So pick whichever one works best for your project.  I chose white.

Using a template insert pins around the edges of your design, then remove the template.

Grab your string or yarn and go around the edges first a few times to get a good outline. Then fill in by crisscrossing the yarn between the pins.  My 8 year old totally helped me make this! If kids help just make sure to supervise because of the pokey pins!

Tie the yarn around a pin when completely covered.  Turned out so fun!

The second finish we tried was with fabric!

Wrap your foam shape with fabric and just glue it onto the back.

Then add pins and strings the same way!  You will want to make sure not to pick a fabric that is too patterned or you won’t be able to see the string!

There you go! Two fun string art knock offs! Which one will you try?
