Faux Concrete Orb Magnet Planter

Have you fallen in love with the adorable air plant trend? It’s a great way to add a pop of nature to your home during the winter months. Air plants are a great alternative to potted plants. If you have a cat like I do, then these are the perfect indoor plant to have. They do not have roots so they do not need soil. Just display them in indirect sun and they are happy.

Today I am showing you how to make a simple air plant orb that you can easily place around to brighten up your home.

Supplies needed to make this project:

FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Balls: 3″ & 4″
FloraCraft® Smooth Finish Paintable Coating
FloraCraft® Foam Cutter
Air Plants – Real or Faux
3/4″ Disc Magnets
Acrylic Paint: Copper
Tea Light Candle With a Metal Base
Painters Tape
Low-Temp Glue Gun & Glue

Instructions:

Put both hands around the foam ball and press it down onto a flat surface to create a 2 inch flat area on the side of the ball. This will be the back of the orb where you will place the magnet.

Cut a small section with the foam cutter off the top of the foam ball.

The base of a tea light is the perfect size for the hole where the plant will rest. Remove the metal base from the tea light. Place the base, edge side down into the flat top of the foam ball. Turn the tea light base back and forth to cut a perfect circle into the foam.

Remove the base and take a metal spoon and gently scoop out the center of the circle. Make the hole 1 inch deep. Once you have removed the foam within the hole, press the spoon against the sides of the hole to smooth the inner walls.

Coat the ball with Smooth Finish. Press the coating into the foam filling all the gaps. Let the coating dry completely. Lightly sand the coating until smooth. This gives the look of faux concrete.

Place painters tape sideways on the foam. Paint the bottom of the foam with copper acrylic paint. Let it dry. Add low-temp glue to one side of the magnet and press it into the back flat side of the orb. The 4 inch orb may need 2 magnets to be strong enough to hold a bigger plant.
